About AAFC
The Afrikan American Farewell Celebration is a powerful and affirming space for Black students to showcase their achievements and celebrate their journey. This event features a full, traditional commencement ceremony, with the main highlight being the moment each graduate walks across the stage to receive their degree and be personally recognized.

This celebration honors the hard work, perseverance, and determination it takes to complete a college degree — especially within the context of a predominantly white institution. It provides an essential space for graduates to be individually celebrated among their community, acknowledging both personal and collective success.

History AAFC
Originally started in the 1990s by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Afrikan American Farewell Celebration has grown into a cherished tradition at Ohio State. It continues to provide Black students and the wider community an opportunity to recognize academic achievements, honor supportive faculty and staff of color, and celebrate the collective accomplishments of the Black Buckeye community.

The use of the "k" in Afrikan holds deep meaning, symbolizing a connection to African heritage and ancestry. As described by event organizers, the spelling is a deliberate choice to emphasize cultural pride and honor the legacy of those who came before.
